Believers have lost out their stand in the Christendom because of their quest for prophecy. There is no prophecy today, that doesn’t have a source. It is either from the Holy Spirit or an evil spirit. So many believers in this 21st century are living their life in search of prophecies (prophecy dependant), than the sure words of prophecy which is the living word of God. 2 Peter 1:19 said “We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts.”
“Prophecies like visions are things that should not be sought for; they have their place in a Christian’s life. But when a Christian’s life is dependent on them, then something is wrong.” “The purpose of prophecy is to rebuke, strengthen, edify, comfort, build-up and encourage the church of Christ (believers)” Robert Liardon.
“But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men” I Corinthians 14:3 NKJV.
“But he who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and Comfort” I Corinthians 14:3 NIV.
If we think prophecy is just the saying of futuristic events, then we’re missing the whole purpose of prophecy, because that is just an aspect of the prophetic. There is more to prophecy than foretelling.
Many today have gotten themselves soulishly addicted to the prophetic ministry, and those who have heed to it have set their mind on the fact that, they just want a prophetic word; instead of seeking God in His written word and desiring to have intimacy with Him. Believers have so heed into prophecy to the extent that they don’t longer know which is from God and which is not. That has cause so many believers their sense of spiritual discernment.
It very important to know the will of God toward us, we can then seek prophecy or prophetic guardians for further clarity.
Believers must guide themselves on these three (3) major issues about prophecy, which are:
- A dependence on personal prophecy
- Twisting the Scriptures
Let me briefly explain these:
- FLEECING: Fleecing is when a Christian/believer uses some sort of physical manifestation to find out the will of God for their life. Many today operate in this act, they throw out fleeces such as “if somebody gives me a word” or “if this person can just tell me this” or “if this prophet will just prophesy into my life on this issue” That is how the ‘If’ wishes will go on and on.
As a believer, you should not make any decision based on a fleece, when we do you will get fleeced.
- A DEPENDENCE ON PERSONAL PROPHECY: Thanks to Jesus Christ and His finished works on Calvary’s cross, we no longer have to depend upon prophets and prophetesses to hear from God. We can now hear Him for ourselves. The Prophetic ministry is a gift that the Holy Spirit has given to the body of Christ for edification and building up of individuals and the church as a whole.
“Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another” (Romans 14: 19 NKJV).
We should not move totally by the prophetic word alone, but by the living word of God, which is the sure word of prophecy.
- TWISTING THE SCRIPTURES: (2 Timothy 2:15KJV) said,
“Study to show thy self approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth”
But many have studied just to show themselves approved unto men and to defend their carnality, incorrectness and rebellious attitude. They have their biblical knowledge to build a tower just like that of Babel around them. (Genesis 11:1-9)
So no to fleecing, keep prophesy in the right place, and never twist scripture to defend our sinful nature.
Rather let the scripture encourages us, conformed us, adjust us, strengthen us and above all be open for the word to also get rebuked when wrong. When we do, the word will definitely defend us in the right season.
God priority is to make Christ known to all people everywhere, through (the great commission) and if our lives have been made his by the reason of us accepting His Lordship over us; we will then stop running from one place to another and from one church to the other in the name of deliverance and prophecy. We will hold unto Him, who is the foundation of life and in whose light we see light. “For with thee is the fountain of life in thy light shall we see light” Psalms 36:9.
We will cling to His promise for our life, for all His promises are for His children; the heirs of salvation.
“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘yes’ in Christ, and so through Him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God” (II Corinthians 1:20 NIV)
“God’s ways are perfect. All the Lord’s promises are true. He is a shield for all who look to Him for protection” 2 Samuel 22:31 NLT
Believers should know that the real essence of prophecy is to testify or witness to others about Jesus Christ, “For the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of prophesy” Revelation 19:10. We should not neglect the place of witnessing and reaching out with the good news of Christ. We should be God’s channel to act on the great commission that was given to every believer according to the order of the gospel.
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nation”. Matthew 28: 19-20. The nation here refer to individuals, nations of the earth and unreached people, who have not yet heard the gospel of Jesus.
In ‘Mark’ the gospel chapter 16 verses 15 to 20, we were also required to “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation.” The whole creation here is referring to anything that God has created.
In ‘Luke’, it also said: “That this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nation” (Luke 24: 47 NLT).
In ‘Acts’ of the Apostles, we were required also to preach to all people; In ‘Romans’, we were reminded of our assignment, which we all must do that “you (we) will testify of me (Him) to the farthest parts of the world”.
One of the reasons for this great mandate is for the redeemed and saved to call lost and unsaved to come and experience God’s salvation for all mankind. We ought to be building bridges of truth to all unreached (unsaved ones). But the issue with the church and believers today is that, we no longer regard the instructions given us on the Holy Scripture. Rather we have neglected the “two lettered word” “GO” to our pastors and missionaries.
We should always have this in mind that, prophecy is a road map, where by its purpose is to point men to Christ Jesus. Our relationship with our heavenly father gives us access to is His secrets and deep things in life. (I Corinthians 2: 9:16). There are things that are freely given to us by God. These are what we should desire to know and find out for ourselves. One of such things that we should desire is what Paul said in (I Corinthians 14:1-3), the ability to also prophecy. This simply means that the grace for one to prophecy is open to those who desire it.
But we should have this in mind that one of the highest characteristic traits of a prophetic person is that he or she should be a trusted friend of God.
God has secrets, and He is looking for some friend, not just a friend but a trusted friend to share His counsel with. It is an open invitation, that anyone can be a friend of God.
“Surely the Lord God will do nothing but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7).
God’s prophetic people are to be His friends who have agreed to walk with Him. “Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?” Amos 3:3 NLT. These categories of people are those who He can entrust His secret message and revelation. Our intimacy with the heavenly father can enable the opening for a good friendship, those who obey and keep His commandment (John 14: 15-20), God will reveal Himself in a different dimension to them.
A very good illustration of Amos 3:3 is a direct action to what happen in Genesis 19: 1-29, where God’s intention was to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, yet He was able to reveal His intention to His best friend Abraham.
It is my prayer that the Lord will give us the guidance to know when to hold on and when to let go and the grace to make the right decision with dignity. Amen.
