The role of leadership is not an easy one. While growing, I would often see the caption, “na who the cap fit” meaning you cannot fit into a position you are not equipped and ready for. Many times, people quest for titles and desire to be called names, not knowing that these titles are actually offices and they have certain responsibilities that demand attention. Leadership in the secular sphere and in religious circles are not a function of names, rather they are a function of meeting needs and being the solution to a world of pandemonium. This is the true order.
After the fall of man, God sought for a way to bring his eternal plan of redemption to come to pass. Before the treason of Adam, God already made a way. In my piece “Why Comfort II”, I explained that God is wisdom personified and that there is never a time where and when God is brainstorming on a way out, or how to salvage a situation. The word of God tells us that worthy is the lamb that was slain before the foundation of the world was laid. This means that the redemptive work of Jesus on the cross of Calvary was something that was already done in the eternity of God, but was yet to find expression in time and space. So God started his dealings with a man called Abraham, whom he called out of his fathers house and asked to go to a place, a location that was not certain to him. The patriarch of faith yielded absolutely. From Abraham came Isaac and from Isaac came Esau and Jacob, from Jacob, the nation of Israel was born and by whom the messiah and savior of the universe would come. Israel means the chosen of God, and needful to know that Jesus was not only going to salvage the human race, creation and the whole universe was in dire need of salvation too, because corruption had eaten deep inside and had altered the normal course of nature. Salvation goes beyond the spirit, soul and body of a man. It engulfs the entirety of creation, ‘animate’ and ‘inanimate’.
Israel as a nation of just about 72 people went into Egypt and grew over a time span of 40 years and their number increased from 72 to over 2 million. If a people of 72 need some form of organized administration, how much more over 2 million?
God kept his promise to the patriarch of faith, Abraham and brought his descendants out of Egypt into the promise land, the land of Canaan, a land flowing with milk and honey.
It is undisputed that over time, the pattern of leadership over a people must change in order to meet up with the demand per time. Men of certain core competencies must be allowed to counter the problem steering in the face with their unique and peculiar abilities. Due to the change in the season they were in their journey in God, there was a need in the change in leadership.
Moses the servant of God had passed on. His life was taken by God because of the way he responded to God’s instructions and that’s the truth however believers must learn to look at things from a broader perspective, Moses was indeed taken by God, however, a careful examination of the season Israel was in their dealing with God was such that they needed a warrior for a leader, not a diplomat. Moses was indeed a diplomat amongst many things that he was. He stood for the people before God and pharaoh, but this was a time where and when diplomacy was not an alternative, it was time for a conquest, to drive out all the enemies of God from the lands God had promised to the descendants of His friend Abraham and it is only by force that victory is achieved in times as such. In my piece “Is The Church Invincible?” I explained that this was the order in times past. It was all about kingdom and the tenets of how it is done.
Although Joshua was a warrior, having seen how by the help of God, Moses was able to prevail through in their journey thus far out of Egypt and the land of bondage, he could not but fret. The children of Israel were a stubborn people, stiff-necked, and unrepentant. They were a rebellious people and easily forgot the faithfulness of the Lord in times past. He saw how God had been with his father and predecessor Moses and desired that same God to be with him. Seeing the responsibility that beaconed on him, his heart failed and therefore he needed some form of comfort, solace, assurance, hope, help also. God who is a loving father saw the state of his elect Israel and the man he had chosen to lead them, so he spoke to Joshua and said:
“2 Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel 3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses. 4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast. 5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. 6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. 7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest 8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. 9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest” Joshua 1: 2- 9.
In my piece “When Is It Rightly the Word of God or Sorcery III”, I exonerated how it is important to understand progression and sequential unfolding of events; understand context and the intent behind utterances.
Joshua was commissioned by God after the death of Moses to lead the people in their next phase of adventure, God promised to give them everywhere the sole of their feet stepped upon. An assurance of their safety and health being was given, and he was also admonished to brace up for what lies ahead. Israel was indeed a tough people to deal with, a number of times, God wanted to destroy every one of them and from Moses he would raise another Israel. All that was needed of Joshua was to be strong and courageous.
All that was expected of Joshua to do was to ensure that the book of the law never departs from him. He was to give all diligence to ensure that he meditate on it day and night (before meditation is possible, there must firstly be a reading, skimming the surface, then studying, intent discovery and understanding what is written in between the lines, and meditating, intentional and focused/deep thinking and ruminating on what has been read and studied).
This book of the law shall never depart from the mouth of anyone who has the responsibility of leadership. Many at times, when leadership is mentioned, people have the obnoxious mindset that it has to deal with clerics, politicians, CEO’s, heads of families, traditional rulers/leaders, kings and the list goes on and on. Leadership however goes way beyond that. If anyone has any other person who is younger in age, less knowledge or experienced and advanced as regards anything, then that person is a leader. This therefore means that every one of us is deeply implicated. By interim, we all must make sure that the book of the law is always within our grasp, always on our mouth.
When you study and meditate upon anything and its reality is furnished upon the template of one’s spirit, anytime such a person stands to speak on that particular subject matter or phenomena, his or her words are usually poignant and pungent. They have the ability to literally bring the listener into the same experience and reality. When counsel oozes out of the persons vocal cavity, such counsel will be immutable because he or she has dined and conversed with divinity; such wisdom are not of this realm. They are simply of impeccable dexterity.
So God told Joshua that his mouth must be filled with what is contained in the book of the law.
The bible says, it is not what goes into a man that makes him unclean, rather it is what goes out. I asked myself a question, can anything go out when it firstly hasn’t gone in? The answer is a NO. This means that what one has taken time to ingest and build into his life is what he will be able to give put. No one can plant a mango into the ground and have a guava tree sprout up and then harvest strawberry.
The word of God says His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness through the knowledge. Everything as regards life and lifestyle, rest, exercise, diet, parenting, peaceful coexistence, relationship with folks around, absolutely everything is embedded in the word of God. Unfortunately, we do not take out time to research into the word and skim the truth out. We have allowed darkness to be our light.
The intent why the book of the law must not depart from our mouth and we must meditate on it because, until we do so, we cannot be able to observe and do all that is in it thereof and until we observe and live our lives based on the principles of Gods words, a good success is not feasible. Success and Good Success is not the same thing.
The provision made available to us is not just to be prosperous, but that in all things, we will have good success.
If what we as believers call prosperity, success or blessing are the same thing that unbelievers enjoy with or without much sweat, either by legit means or by crook or by hook, then we are a besieged city. Our perspective and definition of blessing must widely vary and be unparalleled to what the average unbeliever calls a blessing or success.
The word of God say’s it is the blessing of the Lord that makes you rich and adds no sorrow to it. Blessings from other sources may make anyone rich, but sorrow is also an intricate and inseparable part of the deal.
The anchor scripture for this piece tells us that the meditation must be done day and night.
We are not to read day and night; we are not to study day and night, rather we are instructed to meditate day and night, until then, prosperity and good success by the specification and standard of God will not be the description of our life and essence.
Truth is not a statement of fact but the substance of a reality. Only the word of God is truth. If the truth instructs, it becomes our only chance of true life. The truth today is telling us that if we must prosper and have good success in all ramifications of life, then study and meditation of the word must be an inbuilt and inert part of us. It must be something we do by default.
These escapades cannot be accomplished by strength, but by the spirit of God. May we find grace sufficient to yield so that we can have the testimony of this reality in Jesus name, Amen.
